As a Texas State Representative, I would fight vehemently to end the so-called "War on Drugs" in Texas. At an absolute minimum, Texas must follow suit with Colorado and Washington and allow the recreational use of marijuana. Going beyond this, Texas should lead the charge in abolishing the criminalization of personal drug consumption across the board.
Not only does Texas need to adjust its drug policies, but all "criminals" that have been convicted of non-violent personal drug offenses should be immediately released from prison.
I do not believe that drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin are especially good for the body, but nor do I believe that consumers of these drugs are inherently criminals.
I support treating drug addiction like any other addiction. On principle, I do not support the idea of state-funded drug centers, however I would happily compromise this position if it provided the alternative to sending innocent people to prison.
Americans must wake up to the fact that the "War on Drugs" is an abysmal failure. Our antiquated drug policies are being used to militarize police forces and incarcerate millions of harmless individuals across the country. Behind this sits the American private prison system with an army of lobbyists. So long as people continue being locked up, corporate profits are sure to continue rising.
This madness must end and as a Texas State Representative, I would proudly lead that charge in the house chambers.
